A phrasal verb is a combination of a verb + a preposition or adverb. The whole phrase acts as a verb, and has a different meaning to that of the original verb. E.g.: make up, look forward to, etc.

SEPARABLE AND INSEPARABLE PHRASAL VERBS
Separable phrasal verbs can be broken up by other words.
Inseparable phrasal verbs cannot be separated by other words.
Unfortunately, there is no rule; all we have to do is practice them.
