TEST No 1:
KOFI ANNAN
Kofi Annan of Ghana, the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, is the first to be elected from the ranks of the U.N staff. His first five-year term began on January 1st, 1997 and, five years later, he was re-appointed for a second term by the U.N member states. He gave high priority to revitalizing the UN through a comprehensive programme of reform; strengthening the organization’s traditional work in the areas of development and maintenance of international peace and security; advocating human rights and restoring public confidence in the organization.
Kofi Annan and his twin sister Efua were born in a family of gold merchants in Ghana in 1938. His uncle and both his grandfathers had been tribal chiefs. Upon his retirement, Annan’s father, who worked as an export manager for the cocoa exporter Lever Brothers, was elected governor of Ghana’s Asante province. As a boy, Kofi Annan was sent to an elite private boarding school, and as a young man he studied economics and management at university. He is married to a Swedish artist and lawyer. He has got one son and two daughters.
A lifelong U.N bureaucrat, Annan started working for the UN while studying in Geneva in 1962. Early on, he famously wrote that he would be running this organization one day. For the next few decades, Annan took on a variety of UN assignments involving budget and finance. In the wake of the Iraq-Kuwait-USA war, he was sent to find suitable solutions and negotiate the release and equity of hostages, the quick exit of half a million stranded Asian workers in difficult circumstances, and the priority of selling humanitarian supplies to Iraq.
Annan’s wife, a Swedish artist and lawyer, is interested in two issues of particular concern to her: HIV/AIDS prevention and the education of women. The first black UN Secretary-General was working under Boutros Boutros Ghali from Egypt when he got the big post in 1997. Kofi Annan is also fluent in English, French and several African languages.

TEST No 2:
Cowboys of the American West told of their hard, dangerous lives in songs.
People all over the world have seen all sorts of films about the cowboy. And he is often shown in television shows. But the real life of the cowboy is not often shown. His work has been hard, and his life lonely and full of danger.
The cowboy has told his own story in many songs and ballads. Hundreds of these have come from cowboys whose names are not known. They just sang these songs as they rode on the saddles of their horses across the cattle lands. Or, as they sat at their campfires at night.
They sang about the things that were close to them. Horses and cows and danger and death. Often, they sang about the long ride to the cattle markets where the cows were sold for beef, as in the song called, "Git Along Little Dogie."
Dogie is another name for a young cow, especially one which wanders away from the herd. The song tells how the young cowboy keeps driving the dogies forward. He feels sorry for them, because they will soon be sold for meat. But that's their hard luck, not his. And he keeps pushing them on while he sings.
Day and night, the horse was at the cowboy's side. A cowboy was as proud of his horse as he was of his skill in riding him. There is this feeling in the song "I Ride an Old Paint." A paint, or pinto, is a horse of three or more different colors.
The cattle herds were driven a very long way to the cattle markets and had to be kept and watched on the open trail for many weeks. And the trail took the cowboys over rough country in all kinds of weather. The wild prairie lands were not friendly to men or animals. It was a lonely land. And the howling of wolves and winds at night made it more so.
Across this strange land, no man in the early days of the West knew just where death was waiting for him. A listener hears the mournful feeling cowboys had for the prairie in the song called, "The Dying Cowboy."
The cowboy does not want to be buried out in these wild lands -- in the lone prairie -- as the song says. Still, the dying cowboy does not get his wish. There is no choice. He can be buried only in the lone prairie in a narrow grave six by three. Six feet deep and three feet wide.

TEST No 3:
Social Networks
The names MySpace, Facebook, Orkut are some of the most popular sites on the internet today. These sites are all called 'social networking' sites because they help people meet and discuss things online. Each of these social networking sites has its own strengths: MySpace is especially popular among teenagers, Facebook is popular with college age people, Orkut is especially loved in Brazil, and CyWorld is the site to visit in South Korea. The common thread between all of these social networks is that they provide a place for people to interact, rather than a place to go to read or listen to 'content'.
Social networks are considered to be web 2.0. What does this mean? To understand this, it's important to understand what the original web did (often called web 1.0). Back in the nineties, the web was a place to go to read articles, listen to music, get information, etc. Most people didn't contribute to the sites. They just 'browsed' the sites and took advantage of the information or resources provided. Of course, some people did create their own sites. However, creating a site was difficult. You needed to know basic HTML coding (the original language the internet uses to 'code' pages). It certainly wasn't something most people wanted to do as it could take hours to get a basic page just right. Things began to get easier when blogs (from web log) were introduced. With blogs, many more people began writing 'posts', as well as commenting on other people's blogs.
In 2003 a site named MySpace took the internet by storm. It was trying to mimic the most popular features of Friendster, the first social networking site. It quickly became popular among young users and the rest was history. Soon everyone was trying to develop a social networking site. The sites didn't provide 'content' to people, they helped people create, communicate and share what they loved including music, images and videos. They key to the success of these sites is that they provide a platform on which users create the content. This is very different from the beginning of the internet which focused on providing 'content' for people to enjoy.
Relying on users to create content is the key to the success of web 2.0 companies. Besides the social networking sites discussed here, other huge success stories include: Wikipedia, Digg.com and the latest success - Twitter. All of these companies rely on the desire of users to communicate with each other, thereby creating the 'content' that others want to consume.

TEST No 4:
Spanish Men and Women
1 Recently a series of advertisements has appeared in Spain in which men are being asked to help more in the home and to share the responsibility for household tasks with their wives. This is part of a campaign organised by the town council in Granada in Southern Spain.
2 As in other Western countries, the struggle for gender equality continues. Equality in terms of pay and opportunities has improved enormously in recent years. It is in the home that traditional ideas are more difficult to change. Although most women now have jobs outside the home, many Spanish men still think that domestic tasks are women’s work.
3 Often, though, it is the women themselves, especially those of the older generation, who insist on serving the rest of the family. They see it as their duty, and are very proud of their cooking skills. Life for the housewife is an endless round of tasks to ensure the comfort of every member of the family.
4 Maria is in her late 50s and works full-time, cleaning the large building where I work, and running the cafeteria. Her husband works there too, although his job is less physically demanding. When Maria arrives home, exhausted after a long and tiring day, her work begins again. While the rest of the family relaxes, she does the household work. Her five adult children, who still live at home with their parents, don’t help.
5 "It’s not fair," Maria agrees, "but what can I do? When I ask them to help, they always have something more important to do – going out with friends, making phone calls. Or they say how much better their shirts look when I iron them."
6 On the other hand, it is not true to say that all Spanish men are lazy at home. They too have their duties. My landlord, Pablo, is retired and does a lot of work at home. However, his wife would never dream of asking him to shop for food in the market.
7 The tasks are clearly divided between Pablo and his wife. Pablo carries the washing up to the terrace, but Emilia hangs it out. Pablo takes care of any outside jobs, such as watering the garden, but indoors belongs to his wife.
8 Perhaps the difficulty in changing attitudes to domestic responsibility is related to the differentiation between the sexes. Here men are men and women are women. Unisex fashion is unknown. Chicos and chicas do not wear the same clothes. They dress differently and display their masculinity or femininity with pride.
9 In the squares of the town, the parents and grandparents of these young people gather on warm summer evenings to chat and pass the time of day with their neighbours. Men congregate on one side, women on the other. It has always been that way it seems.

TEST No 5:
California is a colourful state
To travel the streets of Los Angeles is to glimpse America’s ethnic future. At the bustling playground at McDonald’s in Koreatown, a dozen shades of kids go down the slides not much minding that not two of them speak the same language. Parents of grade-school children say they rarely know the color of their youngsters’ best friends until they meet them; it never seems to occur to the children to say, since they have not yet been taught to care.
Most schools are teaching students to celebrate diversity and search for common ground. Inglewood High School, 90% white 20 years ago and 90% black 10 years ago, is 48% Latino today. “We have the same challenges, and I’ve learned to see that if everybody united, we could be a big force,” says Efrain Nava, a 16-year-old Mexican American. “We are all minorities, but together we are a majority.”
California is an ethnic landscape. As recently as 1980, California was 76% white. During the past ten years, the Hispanic community grew nearly 70%, the Asian community 127%, so that by last year’s census, California was only 57% white. It is clear that early in the next century there will be no racial majority at all. The children may have no trouble adjusting, but their parents still have much to learn.
California is, by any measure, America’s most colorful state. The richness of its culture, the liveliness of its fashions and the ruthlessness of its politics all reflect the mix of races and cultures that blend and clash throughout the state. This is the land where Asian dragons dance at Cinco de Mayo parades, where viewers can tune in to the evening news spoken in Tagalog.

TEST No 6:
America After the War
1 In the years after World War I, new technologies changed America. Technology made it possible for millions of people to improve their lives. It also brought great changes in American society.
2 Some of the most important changes came as a result of the automobile and the radio.
Automobiles began to be mass-produced. They were low enough in cost so many Americans could buy them. Gasoline was low in cost, too. Together, these developments put America on the move as never before.
3 Automobiles made it easy for Americans to travel. Trucks made it easy for goods to be transported. Many people and businesses moved out of crowded, noisy cities. They moved to open areas outside cities: suburbs.
As automobiles helped Americans spread out, the radio helped bring them closer together. Large networks could broadcast the same radio program to many stations at the same time. Soon, Americans everywhere were listening to the same programs. They laughed at the same jokes, sang the same songs, and heard the same news.
4 Another invention that produced big changes in American life was the motion picture. American inventor, Thomas Edison, began making short motion pictures at the turn of the century. In 1903, a movie called “The Great Train Robbery” was the first to tell a complete story. In 1915, D.W. Griffith made a long, serious movie called “Birth of a Nation.”
5 By the early 1920’s, many American towns had a movie theater. Most Americans went to see the movies at least once a week. The movie industry became a big business. People might not know the names of government officials, but they knew the names of every leading actor and actress. Movies were fun. They provided a change from the day-to-day troubles of life. They also were an important social force.
6 Young Americans tried to copy what they saw in the movies. And they dreamed about far-away places and a different kind of life. A young farm boy could imagine himself as romantic hero, Douglas Fairbanks, or comedian, Charlie Chaplin. A young city girl could imagine herself as the beautiful and brave Mary Pickford.
7 Rich families and poor families saw the same movies. Their children shared the same wish to be like the movie stars. In this way, the son of a banker and the son of a factory worker had much in common. The same was true for people from different parts of the country.

TEST No 7:
English Speaking World
1 English is the most important spoken language in the world: there are over 400 million native English speakers worldwide and over 500 million speakers of English as a second or foreign language. But the importance of English is not in the number of its speakers, but what English is used for.
2 English is widely used as a lingua franca, a language which is used for communication between groups of people who speak different languages, as it’s studied as a foreign language. Also online communities like My Space, YouTube, etc., offer people a way to make friends around the world and practice speaking English.
3 English is the main language of news and information, computer data, satellite transmissions and TV in the world. Five thousand newspapers, over half of the newspapers published in the world, are published in English. Even in many countries where English is not the main language, there is at least one newspaper in English. Much of the information countries disseminate about themselves outside of their borders is in English.
4 English is the main language of governments, business, scientific research and data, foreign affairs and organizations such as UNICEF, Greenpeace or the Nobel Prizes Academy.
5 American and British popular music are heard all over the world. American movies are seen in almost every country. Books in English are available even in countries where few people actually use English. One reason that students give for learning English is to understand these songs, movies and books.
6 English is spoken in large hotels and tourist attractions, at airports, and in shops that tourists frequent. Tours are almost always available in English. Even in countries where few people speak English on the street, people who work with tourists generally speak English. In some countries even drivers of buses or streetcars and sellers at newsstands speak English well.

TEST No 8:
ELECTRONIC EMAIL
1. Electronic mail, commonly known as email or e-mail is the transmission of messages over electronic networks like the internet. Instead of using a pen to write a letter on paper, you use your keyboard to type an email message in an email program on your computer. When the email is finished and has been addressed to the recipient's email address, you press the Send button in the email program. This makes the email message go on its journey to the receiver's mailbox on their computer.
2 A dozen years ago, e-mails were considered a very sophisticated method of communication. Nowadays, however, e-mail messaging has become a normal way of communicating, not only between working people but also between people at home. Text messaging and chatting on a mobile phone are still the most frequent methods of communication among teenagers, but e-mails are fast becoming more and more common in this age group.
3 This little flying yellow envelope on the screen changed the world of communication. Words like stamps, post office or postman no longer belong to a teenager’s vocabulary. New words are born: e-mail, sent items, received items, recipient, attachment… and symbols too. These words have replaced the old ones. Your pen friend, or should we say pen pal, is only a click away.
4 Nevertheless, not everyone approves of the spread of e-mails. Teachers are in two minds. On the one hand, it is good that students spend a lot more of their free time exchanging e-mails and as a result get more practice at writing. On the other hand, there is very little attention to correct spelling, punctuation and grammar. What is more, e-mails tend to be very sloppy. Many older people, who are more used to formal business letters, feel also that the style of writing is too informal. For instance, it is quite common to use first names even though one has never met the person.
5 I would say that e-mails are a good invention although they will probably never replace either telephone calls or ordinary letters. As far as I am concerned, they are just another, very efficient, means of communication.

TEST No 9:
Akrit Jaswal
The Seven Year Old SurgeonA young girl in India badly burned as a toddler, her fingers had fused together and curled into a knotted ball. Her shepherd family could not afford surgery, but they had heard of a remarkable young boy being called the child surgeon. Akrit Jaswal was only seven years old when he operated, successfully, on the eight year old girl to release her fingers.
Akrit Jaswal had a reputation, in the region, for being a medical genius. He has been shown to have an I.Q. of 146, the highest I.Q. of any boy his age in India, a country of over one billion people.
He has focussed this phenomenal intelligence on medicine and now, at the age of twelve, claims to be on the verge of discovering a cure for cancer.
An early developer, Akrit was walking and talking by the time he was 10 months old. He was reading and writing by two, and reading Shakespeare, in English, by the time he was five, and is now talking about his theories for oral gene therapy in the fight against cancer
He has been sponsored and mentored by Mr B. R. Rahi the Chairman of Secondary Education in Dharamshala. He is studying for a science degree at Chandigarh College and, at twelve years of age, is the youngest student ever accepted by an Indian University.
Akrit's father left the family a year ago, depressed and exhausted by six years battling with Indian bureaucracy to get his son's intellect acknowledged and resources made available for his cancer research.
Is it possible that this young boy knows something the medical profession does not? Throughout history, scientific breakthroughs have come not only from the established, the learned, and the scholarly, but also from single flashes of insight and inspiration.
Akrit is not phased by his fame and is used to meeting government ministers and press representatives. For ordinary people meeting Akrit, it is very different. When he is in town, they gather for an audience. They come with prescriptions and medicines, seeking advice. They come with ailments and injuries for a diagnosis. They come to see a doctor, a healer. They come to see a guru, and because this is India, there is always spiritual dimension.
Akrit may be famous but, will he be the one to unlock the secrets to a cure for cancer. He was invited to Imperial College, London to find out. He will spend two weeks based at Imperial College having his intelligence tested and talking super-mechanisms, genes and therapies with scientists at the cutting-edge of cancer research.

TEST No 10:
Road Safety Campaign
The United Nations has called for a campaign to improve road safety. The (UN) General Assembly met earlier this month to discuss the issue. This was the first time the one hundred ninety one members have held a meeting to consider the problem of road safety.
The General Assembly invited the World Health Organization to lead the campaign. The World Health Organization is a U.N. agency.
World Health Day this year also centered on road safety. On April seventh, the W.H.O. and the World Bank (WB) released the "World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention." The report estimates that road traffic kills more than one-million people a year. Between twenty million and fifty million more are injured. Road crashes are a leading cause of death among people age five to forty-four.
The economic loss is huge. The report says road injuries cost one to two percent of national earnings in many less developed nations.
In rich countries, the people most at risk of traffic injuries are drivers and passengers. However, in poor nations, fewer people have money for a car. So people walking along roads or riding bicycles or motorcycles are among those at greatest risk. So are those using public transportation.
The report suggests ways to improve road safety. These suggestions are directed at governments, international organizations and others. For example, the report calls for a government agency in each country to coordinate efforts to improve national road safety. The report also calls for stronger traffic laws and stronger enforcement.
It urges more education about the need to use safety equipment like seatbelts. And it calls for teaching more about the dangers of driving too fast and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The report notes that efforts have been made in some parts of the world to improve road safety. For example, it says rates of traffic injuries and deaths have dropped in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ghana and Thailand. Rates have also decreased in many Western nations.
But the report warns about what could happen without immediate action. It estimates that by two thousand twenty, road traffic deaths in less developed countries will increase by eighty percent.

TEST No 11:
Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela, born on January 18, 1918 in Mvezo,Trenskei in the SouthEast of the country, was a great leader who devoted his entire adult life working for equality and justice in South Africa. Mandela has inspired people around the world to work non-violently for a better life. For this, he was known by his clan (clandestine) name ” Mabila” or ‘Tata’ which means father. He was named “Rolihlahla” which means “trouble maker” in the Xhosa language. Mandela’s grandfather was the ruler of the Thembu people and his father was a local chief. Mandela was the first person in his family to attend school (both of his parents were illiterate). On the first day of school, a teacher at the Methodist mission school, Miss Mdingane, re-named him Nelson. Nelson did well at school and went on to graduate from college and attend law school at University of the Witzatersrand where he was the only black African student in his class.
By 1942 ; Mandela was involved in political causes. He bagan attending meetings of the African National Congress (ANC), a revolutionary group whose aim was to fight Apartheid and its racial discriminatory laws. Mandela helped found the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in 1944. He organized boycotts and strikes to fight for voting rights and equality for Black South Africans. Mandela married Evelyn Ntoko Mase and had four children. In 1956.Mandela and over 100 associates of his were arrested and condemned for treason. They were all released later. Mandela divorced Evelyn in 1958; then married Nomzamo Winnie Madikizela with whom he had two children.
The national African Congress was banned in South Africa in 1960. In 1964, Mandela was sentenced to life in prison. After 27 years in prison, Mandela was released in 1990. Mandela worked to abolish Aparthied laws and stop the growing violence in South Africa. He also helped establish multi-racial elections which took place in 1994. For his efforts, Mandela, with F.W.De Klerk, who was then the President of South Africa, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize .
In 1994, South Africa held its first truly democratic, non-racial election and chose Nelson Mandela as president. After decades of racist and repressive laws during which the Afrikan Apartheid police-state perpetrated against black people, he managed to establish reconciliation and peaceful resolutions of racial conflicts. Without Mandela’s guidance, South Africa might have lapsed into a bloody civil war. “Freedom Day”, held on April 27 each year, commemorates the anniversary of South Africa’s first democratic elections in which Mandela was elected President.
Mandela served as President of South Africa until 1999 and refused a second mandate. On his 80th birthday, he married Graça Machel after having divorced Winnie in 1996. He published his autobiography book“ Long Walk to Freedom” in 1994 and his second book “ Conversations with myself” in 2010. Nelson Mandela died on December 5, 2013 at the age of 95 after a long illness. He will be remembered as one of the greatest peace-makers and statesman of all time.

TEST No 12:
DO CELL PHONES CAUSE CANCER
Using a cell phone is more than a distraction; it can actually kill you. New research reveals that using a cell phone kills people faster than smoking cigarettes. “This discovery doesn’t surprise me. I’ve been warned about the radiation I endure by sleeping with my head near my cell phone, so I can understand the risk of radiation by talking on a cell phone,” said Junior Morgan Passek.
Researchers have discovered that there is a direct link between brain cancer and cell phone use. They determined that individuals who use a cell phone for ten years double the risk greater than that of both asbestos poisoning and smoking. “I use my cell phone a lot, but knowing the new risk of using my cell phone really doesn’t bother me,” said Freshman Billy Hickey.
Cell phones emit radiation in the form of electromagnetic frequencies as well as Radio Frequencies (RF). The amount of radiation a person will experience depends on the age of the phone, and the distance from the cell station.
Recent studies revealed that over three billion people worldwide use a cell phone and most of them are teenagers. This number is three times greater than that of smokers, and when it is considered that smoking kills over five million people each year, the severity of the situation is revealed.
Dr Vini Khurana, an Australian neurosurgeon from the Canberra hospital believes that “in the years 2008-2012, we will have reached the appropriate length of follow-up time to begin to definitely observe the impact of this global technology on brain tumor incidence rates.”
After over one hundred studies of cell phone use and effects, scientists concluded that people should avoid cell phone use when possible. They have also informed governments and the cell phone industry that they should take immediate action to reduce the radiation exposure.
“I will probably not use my cell as much now that I know this because brain cancer is such a big risk today. I will also text instead of calling, but I would still make calls on my phone,” said sophomore Maddy Broda.
Governments in Europe have already begun to take action by warning against youth cell phone use. They have also urged all citizens to minimize their cell phone exposure. The Mobile Operators association, however, has rejected this research because they consider it to be inaccurate, and conflicting with previous research.

TEST No 13:
Margaret Mead
“I have spent most of my life studying the lives of other peoples -- faraway peoples -- so that Americans might better understand themselves."
Margaret Mead was a world renowned anthropologist who offered much to the scientific knowledge of how human cultures develop. Her 44 books and thousands of articles have been well cataloged and documented so that we may continue to learn from her.
Margaret Mead was born in Philadelphia in 1901 in a Quaker family. Her father was an economics professor. Her mother, Emily Fogg Mead was a sociologist. Margaret began her studies at DePauw University but after a year transferred in order to study what was then a new science, anthropology, at Barnard University under Franz Boaz and his student, Ruth Benedict. She received her undergraduate degree from Barnard in 1923. She ultimately acquired a PhD from Columbia University in 1929.
At the age of 23, Dr. Mead undertook a field study in Samoa in the South Pacific, against Boaz's advice. The experience resulted in her writing of her highly popular book, "Coming Of Age In Samoa", published in 1928. This book remains a best seller. As a result of her Samoan studies she came to believe that adolescence need not be a time of upheaval, and that our society creates problems when we deny sexuality and try to hide it. She studied many southern Pacific native cultures and is largely responsible for the contents of the American Museum of Natural History's Pacific Peoples exhibit. Nonetheless she occasionally had difficulty observing native practices including cannibalism, infanticide and incest.
Mead took a woman's perspective into the field of anthropology. She was the first person to study child rearing practices and their effects on societies. Her theory of imprinting, a method through which she believed children learn, continues to be researched and studied today. She believed that the study of children was essential to understanding ourselves and to improving our futures.
She combined psychological sciences with anthropological field studies for the first time. She believed it was important to create a link between anthropology and other fields of science. She had a great deal to do with making this information available to the general public through her writings, lectures, radio interviews and television appearances, including a number of appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. She was the first to use photography in anthropological field work.
Mead was an energetic spokesperson regarding human rights and social issues including women's rights, child development and education. She often testified before Congress and other government agencies regarding issues she believed to be important.
Margaret Mead died in 1978. She is a member of the National Women's Hall of Fame and received numerous other honors during her life time. She was depicted in the "Celebrate The Century" stamp set released by the Post Office in the 1920s. Since her death some of her conclusions have been called into question, but there is no doubt about her contributions to the science of anthropology and human understanding.

TEST No 14:
UNICEF Stories
NEW YORK, USA, 2 May 2006 – Two former child labourers from India met and shared their life stories with UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman and Deputy Executive Director Rima Salah during a tour to help raise awareness about the plight of children in servitude worldwide. The boys – Puran Banjara, 14, and his friend Samsur Mohamad, 13 – came to the United States last week as part of a visit coordinated by the Global March Against Child Labour.
“I was breaking stones with my brother,” said Puran. “When my grandfather died, my parents had no other choice but to borrow money. We became debt-bonded. The owner used to make me work the whole day, forcibly. I didn’t feel like working. I never saw any books during my childhood. Both of my parents are illiterate.”
Samsur added that his family had illegally emigrated to India from Bangladesh and were thus deprived of any legal identity or status. “I used to collect garbage with my two brothers,” he said. “We used go through the garbage fields to look for glass, plastic and other recyclable materials. We collected about 10 rupees for each bag containing a kilo of this material.”
Puran and Samsur were luckier than many of their peers. Both were rescued from their lot and given a chance to get an education with help from the Global March, a worldwide network that seeks to protect and promote child rights – especially the rights to receive a free quality education and to be free from economic exploitation.
During their US visit, Puran and Samsur travelled to Washington, D.C. and New York with other former child labourers. In Washington, the children met with members of the House of Representatives and Senators. They also met with American schoolchildren. “We gave them the same message, that there are many children like me in the world, working as bondage labourers, so the developed countries should look at helping these kids to get a proper education.”
UNICEF has been working with the Global March in a worldwide task force on child labour that aims to develop programmes addressing the well-being and educational needs of exploited children. An estimated 246 million young people worldwide are engaged in child labour. UNICEF believes that the worst forms of child labour (as defined by International Labour Organization conventions) damage children’s health, threaten their education and lead to further exploitation and abuse.
As Ms. Veneman and Ms. Salah listened carefully to Puran and Samsur last week, they heard the boys’ message to the world. “All children should get an education,” Puran said firmly. “If all children don’t get a proper education, they will remain poor people, resulting in more children being used as child labourers.”
