To reach the consumer, advertisers employ a wide variety of media. In the United States, the most popular media, as measured by the amount of ad spending, are television, newspapers, direct mail, radio, magazines, the Internet, outdoor advertising, and a variety of other media.
In Canadian newspapers are the most popular medium, followed by television, magazines, radio, and outdoor advertising. Canada is the ninth largest advertising market in the world.
In 1999 television attracted about 23.4 % of the advertising dollars spent in the United States. Television is available to advertisers in two forms: broadcast and cable. Broadcast TV- television signals that are sent over the air rather than through cable wires – generates all of its revenue from advertising. Advertising accounts for about 60% of cable television revenues with the rest coming from subscriber fees.
To run commercials on television, advertisers buy units of time known as spots. The standard units of time are 15, 30 or 60 seconds in length. These spots are purchased either locally or from a national network. Because of the high cost national network spots, ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions of dollars, only large national advertisers can afford to run network television spots. Advertisers wishing to reach a local audience can buy time from an individual station. But even these spots cost so much to produce and run that small and even mid-sized companies cannot afford them.
Because television commercials combine sight, sound and motion, they are more dramatic than any other form of advertising and lend excitement and appeal to ordinary products. But TV spots are too brief to provide much product information. As a result, television works the best for products such as automobiles, fashion, food, beverages, and credit cards that viewers are familiar with and easily understand.

Brain Drain in Africa
The Economic Commission for Africa estimates that between 1960 and 1989, some 127,000 highly qualified African professionals left Africa. According to the International Organisation for Migration, Africa has been losing 20,000 professionals each year since 1990. This has raised claims that the continent is dying a slow death from brain drain which has financial, institutional, and societal costs. African countries get little return from their investment in higher education, since too many graduated leave or fail to return home at the end of their studies. The Unite Nations has finally admitted that emigration of African professionals to the West is one of the greatest obstacles to African’s development.
Kofi Apraku, an African living in the US, is eager to go back home. Nearly twenty years ago, he came to America as an exchange student to finish high school. Kofi ended up staying there to get his doctorate. He achieved distinction not only in his professional career, but also in his social and personal life. Now a professor of economics at the University of North Carolina at Ashville, Apraku is preparing to go back to Ghana to work with the ministry of agriculture as director and policy counselor. “The missing link for Africa’s social and economic development,” he says, “is the African immigrant who has become educated and experienced abroad but who has not been able to go back home.
A number of factors have kept expatriates, such as Apraku, from getting back to their homeland. Somewhat like African refugees, African immigrants are victims of brutal governments, poverty, civil wars, poor economies, etc. According to a United Nations estimate, 100,000 trained professionals like Apraku are working in the West. Most of them can’t – or won’t- return. The result: a devastating brain drain that has deprive the African continent of much of its top talents.
Surprisingly, some Africans are willing to return to where they belong. Despite the very low salaries, poor professional facilities and limited opportunities, they are decided to make it back home. “Africa’s development remains an African responsibility,” says Apraku. “Some of us have been lucky to get enough experience to share such a responsibility,” he continues.
Certainly, the trip back home can be hard. For instance, the average salary in African universities does not exceed 500 dollars a month. Many of the best-paid jobs in Africa still go to foreigners. Thousands of foreign advisors in the public sector in sub-Saharan Africa are paid up to 4,000 dollars a month. It is true that these have expertise unfound in Africa, but this situation can be changed if, and only if, educated Africans are willing to sacrifice and work together for a brighter tomorrow in Africa.

Alternative medicine
Alternative medicine is, by definition, an alternative to something else: modern, Western medicine. But the term ‘alternative’ can be misleading, even off-putting for some people.
Few practitioners of homeopathy, acupuncture, herbalism and the like regard their therapies as complete substitutes for modern medicine. Rather, they consider their disciplines as supplementary to orthodox medicine.
The problem is that many doctors refuse even to recognize ‘natural’ or alternative medicine, so they call for a radically different view of health, illness and cure. But whatever doctors may think, the demand for alternative forms of medical therapy is stronger than ever before, as the limitations of modern medical science become more widely understood.
Alternative therapies are often dismissed by orthodox medicine because they are sometimes administered by people with no formal medical training. But, in comparison with many traditional therapies, western medicine as we know it today is a very recent phenomenon. Until only 150 years ago, herbal medicine and simple inorganic compounds were the most effective treatments available.
Despite the medical establishment’s intolerant attitude, alternative therapies are being accepted by more and more doctors, and the World Health Organization has agreed to promote the integration of proven, valuable, ‘alternative’ knowledge and skills in western medicine.

American Radio and TV
The problem of describing American radio and television is simply this: There is so much of it, so many different types, and so much variety. In 1985, there were over 9,000 individual radio stations operating in the United States. Of this number, over 1,000 were non-commercial. That is, no advertising or commercials of any type are permitted. These public and educational radio stations are owned and operated primarily by colleges and universities.
At the same time, there were close to 1,200 individual television stations. Of these TV stations, just under 300 were non-commercial, that is non-profit and educational in nature. Like the non-commercial TV stations, the no-commercial radio stations are supported by donations and grants from private organisations. In short, if someone wanted to describe what can be heard and seen on American radio and TV, he or she would have to listen or watch close to 10,000 individual stations.
All radio and TV stations in the United States, public or private, educational or commercial, must be licensed to broadcast by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Each license is given for a few years only. If stations do not conform to the FCC regulations, their licences can be taken away from them.
Although the FCC regulates radio and TV transmissions, it has no control over receptions.
As a result, there are no fees, charges, or licences in the United States for owning radio and television receivers or for receiving anything that is broadcast on air. This simply means that people need no permission or license to build their own satellite receiving antenna; that metal dish now seen in many gardens or on roof tops of houses.

Awatif Morsy
Awatif Morsy will never forget the day she heard that a new school was to open in her village. “Someone came to the house asking for the names of the children who weren’t attending class,’ she recall. “My mother gave them my name. I was so excited. “Like most eight year-olds in the village of Beni shara’an, Awarif’s life until that important day was divided between back-breaking work in the nearby fields or at home. To girls like her, the new school –a single classroom on the ground floor of a converted house – was a dream come true.
Not everyone in the village was so enthusiastic, at least initially. Some farmers complained that the school would deprive them of the cheap labour the children provided. Even Awatif’s own step-father, Abdelwadoud, was unconvinced. “What does a need to study for? He would ask. Happily, that wasn’t the view of Farouk Abdel Naim, the elderly merchant who was persuaded to donate the premises for the school use. ‘I’ve come to believe that a girl’s education is more important even than a boy’s,’ Mr Abdel Naim says. “A man can always make something out his circumstances, but a girl can’t. She needs to be educated in order to get on in life.”
Ten years on, it’s hard to find anyone in Beni Shara’an who doesn’t share that opinion. The school –which has now expanded into three classes - is today seen as a wise investment fro which the community is getting tangible rewards. Take the example of the shopkeeper Ahmed Abdel Jaber, himself illiterate. “Until Rawia went to school, my store accounts were in a complete mess”, he recalls. “But before long, she was taking care of all the books for me, as well as helping her elder sister to read and write.” Rawia is disabled, but her father says she’s the most capable of his four daughters." I can say that to me, Rawia is not longer just a girl; she’s more precious than ten sons.”
While the drive to get more Egyptian girls into school is bringing benefits in places like Beni Shara’an, the impact has been felt nationally. From 227 community schools set by UNICEF and its partners since 1990 has emerged a campaign setting girls’ education as one of Egypt’s top development priorities.

Aziza
Sixteen-years-old Aziza has worked in many houses in Casablanca, Fez, Meknes, and Rabat since she began working as a domestic at eight. “I’ve never stayed long in one job because all the women I worked for treated me badly. When I went home for the “Eid” I didn’t come back. And of course, I didn’t get all my salary.” Aziza told Human Rights Watch.
Aziza said that in her recent job she worked eighteen hours a day without rest, breaks or days-off : “When you finish something you start something else – even sitting you have to be doing something . I especially disliked childcare responsibilities. The family would go out and leave me with a baby who would cry and keep me awake at night. I slept in a small storage room under the stairs. it was very small”.
Actually, Aziza didn’t object to working since her family needed money. Her mother received 400 dirhams a month for her work but she herself got nothing.
Aziza told human Rights Watch that hard work and lack of sleep became too much for her to bear. So she left her last employer without permission or money. But she was fortunate because the police at Casablanca train station found her crying and asked her whether she wanted to return to the house where she worked. When she refused, they searched* her bag and clothes to see if had stolen anything, and when they found nothing, they took her to a local non – governmental organization working with street children, including former child domestics.

Billy Johnson
Billy Johnson is from Jamaica. Now he lives in an apartment in London in a district called Brixton. A lot of Jamaicans live there.
Billy came to England in 1980. When he was in Jamaica, he didn’t live in an apartment. He lived in a very old house with an iron roof. He wanted to work hard, but there weren’t many jobs in his home country. He sometimes worked on a sugar plantation or at the port, but he never found a regular job.
At weekends, he played football with his friends and after the games they played music. Billy was happy, but he was hungry and worried about his future. He wanted to marry his girl-friend Rosita, but he didn’t have any money. Sp, he went to England and got a job at a train station in London. At first he cleaned toilets and platforms; then he became a ticket collector. He wasn’t rich, but he had a regular job. Rosita went to England too and they got married.
In England, a lot of people travel by train every day. Billy collects their tickets. He doesn’t get a good salary, but he is happy with his family. Rosita works in a supermarket, and the children go to school every day. Now, Billy doesn’t play football, but at weekends, he takes his family to stadiums to watch football matches.

Boys and Girls
Do you think that girls and boys are treated equally?
This is what three young people think about this question.
In my home, my brothers and I are certainly not treated in the same way. I’m the one who has to do the washing up, whereas my brothers can sit around and do nothing. Also, when I want to go out, I have to tell my parents where I’m going, yet they never question my brothers when they go out.
Sandra, 17, Manchester.
I o to a mixed school where boys and girls are supposed to be treated in the same way, but many of our teachers are much stricter with boys than with girls. The girls can talk and mess around in class, yet nothing happens to them; whereas if a boy does the same thing, he’s in real trouble.
Tom, 17, Leicester.
In my firm, I’m the only woman training to be a mechanical engineer. I’m generally treated in the same way as the men: I get the same salary and have the same working conditions. Y et I feel that if a woman makes a mistake people say ‘That’s because she’s a woman’. Also the men are given more responsible jobs to do than me.

Dear Sir,
I am writing to you because of the possible changes at the chemical factory at Dorington in Wessex. We have heard from recent reports that you propose to allow the factory here to expand. This will lead to a considerable increase in explosives production at Dorington. We feel that it is unfair to impose such a large danger on our community.
There are two main reasons for our fear: Firstly, there have been two serious accidents at the Dorington factory in the last two years. In one, three workers from our village were killed and others badly injured. In the other, an area of 10 square kilometres was polluted with chemical waste. There has never been a public inquiry into these accidents. Secondly, we have heard that the planned extension will be for the production of even more dangerous materials.
Because of these real fears, the whole village of Dorington has come together to defend itself against your department’s proposals. We will fight any plan to expand the factory until your department has agreed to hold a public investigation into the accidents. We also demand that the plans for expansion be made public and inspected by an independent expert.
We hope that you understand how anxious we are by the changes you want to make at Dorington and look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Councillor mary Maclaughlin

Child Labor
At the end of the millennium, a lot of importance was given to the campaign against child labor. The last time there was hope for change was at the turn of the last century, during the campaign to get US children out of factories.
Brazil, the South America’s largest, richest and most heavily populated country, exports everything from shoes to orange juice to the U.S its largest market. Yet, for all its riches, Brazil also the enormous problems: 76% of the population lives in urban areas, In the countryside millions of workers work as day laborers. Among them are badly-paid children under 14 who work illegally.
Parliament members denounced Nike’s involvement with child labor, and asked the Brazilian government to cancel the sponsorship contract signed with that company. It means that the Brazilian soccer team wouldn’t use Nike’s symbol on their T-Shirts or any other sports material until the company stopped the exploitation of children .According to the international Labor Organization, there are 250 million working children around the world 3.8 million of them are from Brazil.
Brazil has been working with UNICEF and the international Labor Organization to eradicate child labor, which has become a national issue. The municipal Child Foundation programme id designed for children working on sugar – cane plantations under hazardous conditions, or for those about to start working in such places. The project has managed to enroll 330 children in public schools, provided them with additional educational activities and food, and helped transport them to the local public health posts for medical and dental care. As a result of the project, employers began banning children from their fields.

School Drop-outs
Dropping out of school is a serious problem in Morocco. Each year, nearly 200,000 children leave school before completing their primary education. A new government initiative in morocco offers some measures to reduce the number of students who withdraw from school. This initiative is part of an awareness campaign targeting parents.
Researchers and government officials largely attribute the phenomenon to the ignorance of poor parents who do not realize the importance of education. Some parents, for example, withdraw their children from school due to the competing demands for household income which often push children to work. Drop-out rates are higher among children of illiterate parents. These rates can be reduced if we sensitize parents about the importance of sending their children to school. In 2006, Morocco launched a number of awareness campaigns to address this growing problem. These campaigns aim at introducing a national program which encourages school children to make a list of non-registered children and children who have dropped out. More than 14,000 teachers and headmasters will also be responsible for implementing this plan.
The initiative is considered a logical one because it will get children who have dropped out back into the school system, and it will act as a preventive measure because it raises students’ awareness to the negative consequences of dropping out. The initiative was tested last year in a few regions. Fatima Lharti, a twelve-year-old schoolgirl from Tangiers, says she managed to stop approximately one dozen children from dropping out and persuaded a number of others who had already dropped out to come back to school. "The most difficult part of the work is convincing parents." However, "when they hear children – the same age as their own – talking about the consequences of taking their children out of school, most of them come around within a few minutes," Fatima proudly told Magharebia website reporter.
Samir El Garoumi missed a year of school to work for his family. He is now back in school and has struck a healthy balance between work and studies. In the morning, he goes to school and in the evening, he helps his father in his workshop. This year, he is taking part in the initiative to make a list of children who are not in school. He also advises parents in his family circle to allow their children to finish their education.

A lot of people in developing countries suffer from illiteracy. Write a short essay about the causes and consequences of this phenomenon and suggest some solutions (Approximately 250)
Here are some suggestions to help you :

FLYING IS BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH
Flying is the safest way to travel… or is it? Some doctors think the airplane is a dangerous place, especially for the old or the unhealthy.
Although the airplane is pressurized, there is less oxygen than on the ground. Anyone with heart disease or a lung problem notices the difference much sooner. Even healthy people find it difficult to concentrate after hours of breathing less oxygen than usual. So anyone who has had heart attack should not fly for at least two weeks after the attack. After an operation, you should stay on the ground for at least ten days.
Because of changes of pressure, pregnant women shouldn't’ t take a flight lasting more than four hours after their thirty-fifth week or a shorter flight after 36 weeks. People with bad colds will probably get earache during take-off and landing. Even if you feel well when you get on the plane, you will possibly feel ill when you get off. Sitting on a lane for many hours-especially in economy class where there isn’t very much leg room-gives everyone aches and pains, so you should take some exercise, especially on long flights. Most of the air you breathe is recycled so you will possibly catch a cold or flu from one of the other passengers.
Flying also causes dehydration. Everyone needs to drink more in the air, but you shouldn’t drink alcohol because it makes you even more thirsty.
The most common problem is jet lag. But there isn’t much you can do to prevent it. You should change to your new time zone as soon as possible and you shouldn’t sleep if it’s still daylight. Flying is the safest way to travel, but it may be threat to your health!

Frederick Douglas
Frederick Douglas was born a slave in Maryland in 1817. He was taken from his mother as a baby and raised by his grandmother. He learned to read and write by himself, though slaves were forbidden to do so. Before long, he was teaching other slaves to read and write, for which he was punished severely. One day, he was sent to a slave breaker’, a man who punished slaves and broke their spirits’. Douglas refused that; and at the age of twenty-one, he ran away to the North for freedom.
Douglas lived first in New York, then in Massachusetts. He was always in danger of being caught by ‘slave catchers’ and returned to slavery in the South. In 1841, he attended an anti-slavery meeting and was asked to tell of his life in slavery*, though this was a dangerous thing to do.
Douglas was only twenty four years old, but his speech was so forceful that all the people stood up and applauded when he finished.
For the newt twenty years, Frederick Douglas was an anti-slavery speaker. He travelled in the country and to Europe speaking against slavery. During the war between the north and the south, he helped recruit black soldiers for the Union Army. His own sons served as soldiers.
When the war was over, Frederick Douglas was the most respected black leader in the United States. He had government posts and continued to speak out for justice. He died in 1895, at the age of seventy eight, still fighting for human rights. He spent his last day at a meeting defending women’s rights.

Geordie
For Geordie lad who used to help his dad with his milk round, he’s achieved more than he ever thought possible. But in spite of his phenomenal success as a musician and actor, he’s only just coming to terms with his childhood…
Sting recalls life with his parents. "They were very smart. In another era they could have gone to university, done well. But when I’d see things on television as a kid-like people skiing, flying, the good life – I’d ask them about it and they’d say it was for posh people. We were the wrong class. Not that there’s anything wrong with being working class. But there is something wrong with being poor. I’ve been poor and I never want to be poor again. I was given the means to escape, though – by education, having a talent and a desire to leave – and that sets up all kinds of pressure within a family, knowing that someone wants to break out. It started for me when I passed my primary school exam, travelled into town to the posh grammar school, wore a uniform, left my friends behind."
He helped his father on his milk round…" Picking up the empty bottles was my speciality," he remembers. "I had big hands and could carry 10 at a time. We ran from house to house, just to get it done in live or six hours and be back for breakfast."
But he was still looking for some recognition. "Dad had a couple of older kids working with him, too, and I always felt that they were his favourites. I was just the son; I had to fight for acceptance. It was typical of his generation. You didn’t show your feelings; you didn’t even hug your children, I saw that and grew up thinking it was the proper way to behave. Now I’ve forced myself to go the other way with my kids and my friends. I hug them all now. I didn’t use to show affection for my mother, but luckily, before she died, I learned how to. It’s such a simple idea, touching people."
"I wasn’t aware of what was going on at the time, of course, but I’m sure my ambition was to get noticed by my father. I remember going home with the county junior sports trophy – you know, ‘look what I’ve won! ‘– and he said, ‘yeah? and looked out the window."
When asked about his birthplace, Sting says: "The truth is. I’m fiercely proud of coming from Newcastle. All the same, I still say it wasn’t a great place to grow up. Basically, it’s a love-hate relationship I have."
One of the questions he’s been asked most often is: Where’s the Geordie accent gone?" His answer is totally honest: "I realised very young that the guy reading the news wasn’t speaking Geordie. The key to power and success had to mean changing the way I spoke."
